![]() Public Enemy's Flavor Flav recently gave his take on the status of the rap game and why mega music stars like Jay Z, 50 Cent, Drake, Ludacris and more are not true hip-hop. In Flav's opinion, hip-hop started to lose its essence when it evolved into slow-sounding beats. "I think the element of hip hop left when rap music started being created on a slow tempo," said Flavor Flav. "It's just stayed there for years. Right now, a lot of rap music today is being created at very low tempos. There's no more of that 'wave your hands in the air like you just don't care' - you know, something that makes you wanna get out there and breakdance." (Gigwise) He also singled out a few key rap icons.
He continued: "Rap music has lost that element right now, mainly over in America. There's not to many great hip hop records out there, but there are some great rap records. L'il Wayne is making some great rap records, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, Snoop - everybody is making great rap records, but it's not hip hop." (Gigwise)In August 2012, Lil Wayne said he found boredom in the rap game. "I just felt like it was time. I got bored," Weezy told DJ Drama when asked about the motivation behind his upcoming mixtape. "Being me, I always feel like I ain't done nothing yet. So I'm always looking for the next thing 'to do.' Other than that, yeah, it does get pretty boring when it comes to just the rapping and all that type of stuff. I've done so much of it. I've been doing it since I was eight and I'm about to be thirty in September and I'm still rapping. I kind of feel like I'm getting old. [laughs]" (Drama Like The DJ)Last year, West Coast rapper Lil B shared his thoughts on hip-hop not being authentic. "I've [taken] rap one hundred percent seriously for so long, that I see it now, it's a joke to me now because with a lot of the rap artists that are in it, they're not truly authentic," Lil B reasoned in an interview. "How I feel about authentic is that my whole past is there. Anything that I talk about, you can just check up -- Do I think rap's a joke and I'm having fun? I'm not going to lie. Right now, it is a joke because my life has been so real. Life is so real, bro. I almost lost my life numerous times, like in the streets and everything." (107.5 WGCI)
